WHAT IS A VASECTOMY?
The “vas” (short for “vas deferens”) is the main “sperm pipe” that delivers sperm up towards the penis from the testicle. The “-ectomy” part means that the pipe is to be “cut or disconnected”. We do NOT touch the plumbing that would affect your testosterone levels, sex drive, erections or health of your testicles. You still will produce “cum” (semen or ejaculate) but it just won’t have sperm in it once you have cleared out the piping system.
WHAT MAKES A “NO-NEEDLE NO-SCALPEL” VASECTOMY
DIFFERENT FROM A “TRADITIONAL” VASECTOMY?
Many men shy away from a “Traditional” vasectomy since it uses needles and scalpels. What’s worse is when they get you half-naked with your legs up in stirrups. No wonder most guys dread the thought of getting “snipped!”
At MD for Men, the state-of-the-art “No-Needle No-Scalpel” vasectomy is performed in less than 20 minutes. You simply lay down with your head on a pillow. After a couple “spritzes” of a numbing spray, your vasectomy can be done with the skin, the vas and the surrounding tissues nice and numb. A “dissector” is then used to make a small window in the skin to deliver the vas. The vas is then disconnected with “thermocautery” which uses a special device with a heated tip instead of a scalpel. The ends are then sealed by heat and then occluded with threads or metal clips. No cutting means no stitches which means a faster recovery. In fact, most men report the small openings are closed by the very next day!
No-needles! No-scalpels! Minimally invasive! Simple, safe and effective!
HOW LONG DOES A VASECTOMY
AT MD FOR MEN TAKE & HOW IS THE RECOVERY?
At MD for Men, the consult and the procedure are done in a single office visit. Super convenient! With the “No-Needle No-Scalpel” technique, our vasectomies take less than 20 minutes. Some minor discomfort and swelling is expected for 2-3 days. Good scrotal support (“tightly whiteys”) or a jock strap for the first 4-5 days and with exercise during the first month helps to maximize your recovery. Most men are back to their baseline by a week. Condoms are recommended until you have been given the “green light” that no sperm is seen in the ejaculate. For most men, it takes 12 weeks for all the sperm to get flushed out. Work your way back slowly into sex and exercise once you feel that you are back to your baseline.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
The vast majority of men do great with a “No-Needle No-Scalpel” vasectomy and the complications from this technique are very low. With that said, nothing in this world is 100% so it is important to mention the risks that include but are not limited to symptomatic hematoma (collection of blood) or infection (<1-2%), chronic discomfort/pain (<1-2%), failure with a need to repeat the vasectomy (<1%) and risk of pregnancy despite a successful vasectomy (0.05% or 1:2000). Newer data confirms that vasectomy is NOT a risk factor for prostate cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, dementia or testicular cancer. TELL ME THE TRUTH…
IS THERE MUCH PAIN?
The beauty of this technique is most men just report pressure and mild discomfort during the vasectomy! At MD for Men, our men are comfortable enough that we will spend most of the time just talking about your work, family and what you like to do for fun. For some guys, the most unnerving part is the first “spritz” of the numbing spray on each side that may feel like a mild rubber band snap. Bottomline, it’s a lot less painful then what the women we love had to go through for child delivery or would go through for a tubal ligation where they cut into the abdomen to tie off her tubes that requires a longer recovery and general anesthesia. Thanks to all you guys stepping up to the plate and taking one for the team!

WILL IT AFFECT MY…
ERECTIONS, SEX DRIVE OR HORMONES?
The answer is “No!” There is no evidence that snipping your pipes will alter your sex drive, erections or testosterone levels.
CAN I GET MY VASECTOMY REVERSED?
While technically the answer is “Yes,” you should go into your vasectomy thinking and planning on it being a permanent procedure. If you have any doubts, hold off on your vasectomy until you and your partner are truly ready. For inquiring minds, a vasectomy reversal is a 3 hour procedure done under conscious sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia. While success rates can be high (90+%), it is NOT 100%. Please note that the success rate declines the longer it has been since your vasectomy. Nothing will be as good as the original stuff!
